Changes at David E. Kelley's Prod. Company

Jeffrey Kramer, the head of uber-producer David E. Kelley's production company, unexpectedly departed his position this week. In recent years, Kramer was Kelley's right-hand man, and served as co-executive producer on some of Kelley's biggest hits, including "The Practice" and "Ally McBeal." Kramer also worked with Kelley on "Picket Fences" and "Chicago Hope."

The move comes as Kelley prepares to start a new deal with 20th Century Fox, and that might be one of the reasons for the departure.

"David is about to enter into a new deal with 20th Century Fox Television, and this is a great time for David and Jeffrey to pursue their different interests," a statement from Kelley's spokesperson said.

Kramer was an actor before becoming a major producer, appearing in small roles in film and television. In recent months, tabloids reported Kramer was involved with "Ally McBeal" star Calista Flockhart, and the relationship was rumored to cause tension at Kelley's offices.
