ALLY MCBEAL CREATOR HITS THE BIG SCREEN

David E. Kelley, the producer of The Practice, Ally McBeal and Chicago Hope, is branching out into movies. He's done it before with box-office turkeys From the Hip and To Gillian on Her 37th Birthday, but this time he means business. Already in the can is his hockey comedy Mystery Alaska, about a small-town hockey team that gets a shot to play the New York Rangers. The film stars Russell Crowe, Hank Azaria and Burt Reynolds. And Lake Placid, a film about a 35-foot-long crocodile that ends up in a Maine lake, will begin filming soon with Bill Pullman and Bridget Fonda. Does this flurry of movie activity mean that Kelley may pull out of personally writing every episode of McBeal and The Practice? "I'm content to stay in television, for now," TV's hardest-working producer told The New York Times.
