Synopsis:

Izzie returns to work; Seattle Grace residents position themselves to avoid layoffs; Cristina tries to work with Arizona in the pediatric ward.

(From ABC)
Several weeks after her near-death experience, a recovering Izzie returns to work. Meanwhile, nervous that there will be layoffs in the hospital in the wake of an announcement from the Chief, the Seattle Grace residents compete to survive the cuts, including Cristina, who attempts to work alongside Arizona in pediatrics. And Bailey and Alex's patient's already complex case is further complicated by her schizophrenic son.

(Recap From ABC)
Everyone is on pins and needles—as are we—to see who's going to survive the cuts the merger demands. The paranoia leads to some strange behavior, like Cristina volunteering for peds (since she thinks it'll keep her job safe) when we all know she can't stand children! Arizona is taken in, at first, but Callie tips her off that Cristina is merely sucking up. Given Cristina's obvious reluctance to play hide and seek with her underage patients, we thought Arizona would realize sooner she was being used.

Callie, meanwhile, is applying for a job in Portland and Arizona doesn't protest, because she's not sure she "has the right to." But then Callie calls her her girlfriend and Arizona demands she stay put! And that she go "grovel" to the Chief and demand her old job at Seattle Grace back. "You don't want to mess with me!" she tells Callie, who appears to cave. No mean feat on Arizona's part, as we remember the shouting match Callie had with the Chief before she walked out!

Izzie shocks us all by showing up for work! In a voluptuous long red wig, no less! She insists she's fine and even aids Derek in a five-hour operation. Alex tries to get her to admit she's not up for such an intensive procedure. He finally relents, but insists on interrupting to make sure she gets her meds and food. She lasts through the surgery—after doffing the heavy wig—and later tells Alex, "For a few hours, I forgot I had cancer and i forgot George was dead." He urges her to keep doing what she loves, but says, "You've got to pace yourself, because I can't be your nurse."

Lexie is freaking out that she's going to be cut and Mark urges her to calm down. "You deserve to be here, act like it," he tells her. She volunteers to babysit a paranoid schizophrenic and then, when he bolts, worries she's sure to be fired. But when he's found and she's allowed to help repair his spleen, she gushes about it to another intern. She's crushed when the intern tells her his wife, who's expecting a baby, has just been fired. Mark finds her crying and assumes she's been cut as well, but she's just upset to see most of her class lose their jobs.

Meredith, Cristina, Derek, Owen, Alex, Izzie and Mark's jobs are all safe for now, but there's another round of cuts coming soon.
