Lulu (Wendy Moniz) represents an old friend when one of the woman's adopted children is murdered and the other is taken away after her husband becomes a suspect. Meanwhile, Nick helps a mentally challenged man he knew when he was a boy. Alvin: Alan Rosenberg. Jake: Raphael Sbarge. Laurie: Kathleen Chalfant.

Lulu Olson's child custody ethics are put into question when a girl she placed in the custody of a longtime friend is found dead. Matters become more complicated when the police search the home, find questionable lifestyle evidence and arrest the father for his adopted daughter's murder. Laurie Solt argues against Lulu in court to remove the Twains' other adopted daughter from their custody. Meanwhile, Nick Fallin takes on the case of an old neighbor, Hugh Williams, a mentally retarded man who wants to get his dog out of the pound. Hugh irritates Nick by bringing up old memories of Nick's mother and the neighborhood where they once lived. In the end, Hugh's simple and endearing nature becomes destructive.
