Nick (Simon Baker) represents a 16-year-old who wants to put her baby up for adoption after her father is arrested for murdering her gravely ill mother. Nick also represents the hospital where Brian (Johnny Sneed) is accused of negligence that led to the death of a patient. Lulu: Wendy Moniz. Laurie: Kathleen Chalfant. Burton: Dabney Coleman.

Nick Fallin and Laurie Solt take on the responsibility of finding a home for a teenager, Betsy Fortunato, and her baby girl when her father is accused of killing her invalid mother who suffers from Huntington’s disease. When Nick and Laurie find out that the mother’s brain damaging disease is hereditary, it puts Betsy and her child’s future in jeopardy and they soon learn things are not really what they seem. Meanwhile, Nick and Lulu’s friendship becomes strained when Brian Olsen, Lulu’s husband, comes under fire for losing a patient during a routine surgery and Nick is employed by the hospital to look into the case. During all this, Burton feverishly tries to set Nick up on a blind date.
