Just as Violet's personal life takes a turn for the better with Scott, the paramedic, Joanna (the abused woman she met at the airport months earlier) arrives in need of urgent medical attention, being both pregnant and badly beaten; Cooper, Charlotte and Amelia all counsel Erica on the toughest decision of her life; and Addison and Jake meet with potential surrogates.

(Recap From ABC)
Joanna, the woman Violet met in the airport in "God Laughs," stumbles into the office. She's been beaten badly, but loses consciousness before being able to identify her attacker. Violet believes it must be her husband, David, who has hit her in the past.

The team learns that Joanna is pregnant as she's rushed to the hospital. David shows up claiming he had a wakeup call after Violet talked to this wife. He swears he didn't beat her. Violet doesn't believe it. Addison determines there's no fetal heartbeat. The baby is gone.

A hysterectomy would give Joanna the best chance for survival. Violet knows she wouldn't want that. Unfortunately, it's not her call. With Joanna in an unconscious state, David has the legal right to order the procedure done. Addison manages to save the patient without doing the hysterectomy. David is not happy about this. He wants Joanna transferred to a different hospital as soon as possible.

When Joanna wakes up, she tells Violet that David beat her when he found out she was pregnant. She doesn't want to go to the police. It's not because she's afraid. It's because she's furious. She wants David dead. Her exact words to Violet are "I'm gonna kill him."

David is beyond agitated when he learns that his wife has been released from the hospital without his knowledge. He'll have a hard time finding her since Violet is taking care of Joanna at her home. The two women have a heart-to-heart chat. Joanna assures Violet that she has no intention of following through with her threat to kill David.

Violet opens her front door to find David on the other side. He forces his way into the house. When Violet tries to pull him away from Joanna, David knocks her unconscious. She awakens to the disturbing sounds of Joanna stabbing her husband repeatedly. It's a horrific scene. David is dead and Joanna is counting on Violet to corroborate her claim that she acted in self-defense. The look on Violet's suggests that she may not believe that's entirely true. She seeks comfort from Scott the paramedic, who assures Violet he's there for her.

Cooper convinces Erica to meet with Amelia regarding her tumor because he believes she hasn't given up hope. If she had, she would have started preparing for the inevitable. Unfortunately, the best Amelia can offer is chemotherapy. It'll prolong her life by a few months, but it'll be a rough ride. Erica would much rather make the most of her remaining days with Mason by not doing the treatment.

Erica makes the necessary preparations. This includes telling Cooper that their son would like to see the Grand Canyon on his next birthday since she likely won't be there to celebrate it. Coop has been repeatedly saying that he never would have met Mason if Erica hadn't gotten sick. He feels guilty about being grateful that he got to know his son. Thankfully, Charlotte is there to ease his pain.

Sam and Sheldon embark on a mission to find the perfect mate. Jake suggests hitting on women while hitting the gym. The two eligible bachelors break a sweat, but can't score a date. Cooper suggests they search for a companion through cyberspace. Amelia doesn't think Sheldon needs any help writing his online dating profile since he has no problem telling a lady what she wants to hear.

As for Sam, he stops himself from opening up to Addison when he sees Jake step onto her balcony. These two have decided to start hanging together after a round of failed interviews with surrogate candidates. Not even a sweet offer from Amelia to carry her child can stop Addison from putting the brakes on the baby thing for awhile in an effort to focus on something else. Could that something else be Jake?
