Chapter 2

A few weeks had passed and things were slowly getting better at the Evans house. It was early one morning and Ben woke up first and smiled when he saw that Meg was still asleep. He got out of bed and went quietly downstairs and made some breakfast. When he brought it back upstairs, Meg was just starting to wake up.

Ben: "Good morning. How did you sleep"? He leaned down and kissed her.

Meg: "Well, I only got a little bit of sleep thanks to a certain man who didn't seem to want to sleep last night".

Ben smiled: "Oh, really? It didn't seem as though you wanted to sleep much yourself".

Meg laughed and said "Well, I didn't want you to get lonely staying up by yourself. You needed a distraction".

Ben: "Well, you can distract me like that anytime. I made some breakfast for you".

Meg: "Aren't you going to join me"?

Ben: "I wish I could but I have an early meeting. What do you say we have lunch together"?

Meg: "I can't, I'm meeting Vanessa for lunch. We are going to buy a few things for the baby". Meg looked a little down as she told Ben her plans and Ben thought he knew why.

Ben: "Soon, that will be us planning for a baby of our own and buying baby clothes".

Meg whispered: "But when Ben? We have known each other for almost three years now, we have been engaged for a year and a half. When I thought Tim and I would be married, I wanted to start a family straight away. Just because Tim and I broke up, it didn't mean that I stopped wanting a family".

Ben: "I know Meg but we just a little more time".

Meg: "I don't know how much more time I can give you Ben. I thought with Maria getting this new job, she would start to be more independent and move out but she hasn't. And I can't stand having Tess in the house anymore. Couldn't she move out, let Benjy get used to not having her around all the time and that might help him for when Maria moves out?

Ben: "Meg, Tess is the only person Benjy had for all that time Maria was here in Sunset Beach. I don't think he will let her go so easily. I wish I could ask her to move out to but I want Benjy to feel completely at home here before Tess goes so that Benjy will be strong enough to handle it. I need your support to do this Meg. Please say you will be patient a little longer"?

Meg: "I can't make any guarantees Ben but I'll try".

Ben: "Thank you Meg. I know I don't deserve you. You have put up with a lot because of me and I wish my family wouldn't cause you so much pain".

Meg: "I love you, Ben. I'll always love you no matter what".

Ben: "I love you too. I better get going or I'll be late".

Ben kissed Meg goodbye and Meg finished her breakfast and got ready for work.

Maria had roped Antonio into helping in her art classes even though he had protested: "I can't draw a straight line with a ruler!"

Maria had told him he could hand out art supplies and just help out by watching the children. In exchange Antonio had gotten Maria to help out with counselling troubled teens at the Mission. That day, Antonio and Maria were in Antonio's office at the Mission and Antonio asked how things were going at home.

Maria: "Well, Meg and I are being friendly toward one another, I don't trust Tess as far as I can throw her but Benjy loves her so I can't exactly get rid of her".

Antonio: "You shouldn't have her around Benjy if you don't trust her Maria. A mother's instincts are almost always right".

Maria: "That's what Mama said when she found out you and Ricardo had sneaked out to that party at Ricardo's friends house. You know, the one who parents were away for the weekend".

Antonio: "I know. Me and Ricardo got grounded for a month for that one".

Maria laughed: "But you both said it was worth it!"

Antonio smiled: "It was". Antonio suddenly felt sad when he thought about sleeping with Gabi and how his relationship with his big brother would be destroyed if Ricardo ever found out. But sometimes, he would think of Gabi and wonder what if? What if he weren't a priest? What if Gabi wasn't engaged to Ricardo? What if Gabi hadn't needed love and encouragement when he came to Sunset Beach and they hadn't become as close as they did? Antonio shook his head and smiled at Maria.

Antonio: "But back to the subject, what are you going to do about Tess"?

Maria: "I'm really not sure what to do. Ben doesn't either. It would be easier if one of us could just ask her to move out. But Ben and I haven't been able to spend enough time together to discuss this properly. Either he is at work, with Benjy or with Meg...", her voice trailed off.

Antonio: "You're still in love with him aren't you?

Maria: "Yes, I am. As much as I care about Meg and don't want to see her hurt, I would rather lose her than lose Ben. But I know that some day soon, Ben will ask his lawyers for the final divorce papers and our marriage will be over. And I think that will be the day that my heart completely breaks", Maria finished with tears in her eyes.

Antonio: "Maria, you will find love again. You and Ben shared a special love once. But I truly believe that for some people their first love is their true love but for others it may be their one hundredth love that will be a persons soulmate".

Maria: "I know what you're saying is right, Antonio, but how do I make it stop hurting until I find my true love"?

Antonio: "By embracing everything that is good about your life. Your son, your job, your family and friends. Start a new hobby. You have so much talent Maria. Don't be afraid to let other people see it".

Maria smiled: "You always know what to say to cheer me up Antonio".

Antonio: Well, I was thinking about including that speech in my sermon this Sunday. Do you think the congregation will like it"?

Maria laughed: "Well thanks for the ego-boosting little brother. I'm sure they'll love it".
