Chapter 10

Ben got home at the same time as Maria, Tess and Benjy did. They explained that they had ran into Ricardo and Gabi at the restraunt and they all went back to Ricardo's appartment to eat their take-out. They were very tired and decided to go to bed. Ben stayed up and called all of Meg's friends that he could think of. None of them had seen or heard from her. He was starting to get very worried and decided to call the local hospital but there were no patients by the name of Meg Cummings. He knew that Meg couldn't be reported as a missing person for 24 hours but he decided to call SBPD just in case they had heard anything about Meg. One of the receptionists checked the files on the computer asked a few police - men that were standing near the desk had they heard anything about a Meg Cummings but there was nothing on her. And then a police woman who was just coming off her shift told the receptionist that she had heard something over the police radio about a car crash and she was almost positive that the woman involved in the crash was called Meg Cummings but that the victim had been taken to a hosital outside Sunset Beach because the ER had been too full in Sunset Beach's local hospital. The receptionist passed the information on to Ben and apologised that no one knew the name of the other hospital that Meg had been taken to.

Ben was devestated. What had happened to Meg? She must have been so scared and alone. Why hadn't someone called? He remembered that the answering machine had switched off while he had driven out to Palm Springs.

Ben: "Dammit! Where is she?"

Ben took out the phone book and started to call every hospital in the phone book.

Derek sneaked into Meg's room when he heard the nurse say that she had done the final patients rounds for the night. He had been in Sunset Beach for awhile now keeping on eye on his son, Benjy, and Meg, the love of his life. He cared about Tess, after all she was the mother of his son but he didn't love her the way he loved Meg. He had followed Meg from Ben's house to the cove and had watched while she set up the picnic and waited for Ben. he had seen her making calls on her cell phone and after the last call she had looked so upset and angry but most of all hurt. He had seen how fast she was driving and had followed her to make sure she was alright but he had been too late to save her from going over the cliff. When she went over the cliff, he had stopped his car and ran towards the cliff intent on saving Meg. Then he seen other people running down to help and decided he couldn't be seen, not by Meg or the other people. He had called for an ambulance on his cell phone and had waited until she was in ambulance and followed her to the hospital. he knew he couldn't ask the doctors or nurses how she was because they would want to know who he was. So he waited until it was safe to sneak into Meg's room. He wanted to be with her, even if she didn't know it. She had no one else and he knew that she shouldn't be alone at a time like this. She needed someone who loved her to be by her side and his brother was nowhere in sight as usual.

Derek thought: "Meg, why couldn't you have just loved me? I never would have kept you waiting."

He had overheard the doctor saying to the night nurse that Ms. Cummings was going to be fine but he didn't like her being alone.

"Well, she's not alone now" Derek said quietly to himself, "she'll always have me. I love you so much Meg. You don't have to be scared anymore."

Meg started to wake up and although she was still very drowzy from the medication, she could just about make out a man sitting beside her, holding her hand.

She smiled when she saw that it was Ben and put one of her hands up to his face.

"Ben," she said weakly, "you're really here".

Deerk was a little startled but then remembered that she couldn't know who he really was, at least not yet.

Derek: "I'm here sweetheart. I love you so much and I need you to get better OK?"

Meg started to cry: "I was so scared that you didn't love me anymore. I thought you only cared about Maria."

Derek cursed his brother for hurting Meg so badly.

Derek: "No, sweetheart, your're the only woman I love and I'm never going to let you doubt that again. Meg I want you to try to sleep again. I want you to get better soon so that we can start our life together."

Meg: "Please don't leave me."

Derek: "I won't sweetheart, I promise. I'm going to stay right here by your side while you fall asleep."

Meg drifted off to sleep again: "Thank you Ben. I love you so much".

Derek: "I love you too Meg".
