Chapter 11

Derek sat by Meg's side for a long time after she fell asleep making plans in his head for when the time would come, when he could take Meg and Benjy and start over again. He knew that Benjy liked Meg but was following Tess's orders to be mean to her. Derek hated being apart from his son. Derek started to remember everything that had led him to this night - tricking Ben into thinking Maria was cheating on him, rescuing Maria from the ocean the night everyone thought she had drowned, kidnapping her and drugging her into sleeping on the private plane that he had hired to take them to Seattle. And then he had kept her in a locked bedroom for almost five years. Sometimes he had drugged her but mostly he just left her in the bedroom with books to read and he knew she loved art so he bought her sketch pads and other art supplies. Sometimes she screamed and begged to be let out of the room but he just ignored her although he knew it upset Tess. He had planned to kill Maria almost immediately after bringing her to Seattle but he got a sick thrill knowing that while Ben was grieving for her, she was actually very much alive. And then he decided he'd wait awhile - let Ben be in pain and be alone for a few years and then kidnap him and show him that Maria was still alive. Then he would kill the both of them and he would move away with Tess and Ben's money. And the plan had worked perfectly, Tess had even gotten pregnant a few weeks after he kidnapped Maria and he wanted to show his child how much he loved him. He considered himself to be deprived of love growing up and he was determined that his child wouldn't know what that would feel like. He had been a wonderful father - he changed Benjy, he fed him, took him for walks and always told him how much he loved him. He knew that Maria and Ben had planned to call their first born son Benjamin, so when Tess had a baby boy, Derek insisted on calling the baby Benjamin. It was just another thing he could take away from Ben without Ben knowing about it. Derek was finally ready to go to Sunset Beach and kidnap Ben when Meg had showed up and so he decided to leave it for awhile longer because he thought his brother would push this woman away just like he had pushed everyone else away. Then Benjy had gotten colds and ear infections and he wanted to be there for his son so his plan had been delayed even longer. And when he was finally ready to kidnap Ben, he discovered that Ben and Meg were engaged and he came to Sunset Beach to kill Meg on the island but he had failed and fallen in love with her instead. When Ben had pushed him off the cliff, he had been injured but managed to make it to the next town where he stayed for a few days until the search for his body had been called off. He hated leaving Meg but he was injured and missed his son so he had went home. He had only been able to call Tess occasionally while he was in Sunset Beach and the last time he had talked to her Maria was still locked up. But when he got back to Seattle he found out Maria had escaped a few weeks beforehand. He had been so angry but he knew she wasn't in Sunset Beach and decided to wait awhile to see if she would turn up and if she didn't, he would go back to Sunset Beach and kill Ben and eventually kill Meg. Well, he told Tess he would kill Meg. He really planned on taking her away from Sunset Beach with Benjy and Ben's money. And then Maria had turned up alive and so he waited to see what would happen. When it looked like Meg and Ben were finally going to get married he sent Tess to Sunset Beach. When Derek had returned to Seattle he decided that he shouldn't see Benjy anymore. He had formed a new plan in his head. If Maria didn't show up, he would send Tess to Sunset Beach claiming that Derek had abandoned her and their baby before the child was born and Tess would ask Ben to care for Benjy while she sorted her life out. He knew Meg wouldn't say no to an innocent child. And once Ben and Meg were raising Benjy, he would kill Ben, take his place and leave the country with Meg and Benjy without anyone realising that the real Ben was dead. But he couldn't see his son because if Benjy remembered Derek in Seattle he would give the whole plot away. It had almost broken Derek's heart to have to watch his son playing in the park without him. Tess had begged him to stop all of the scheming and lying but he couldn't. He hated Ben so much. He had just wanted some of the love and attention that Ben got and he thought that people would care about him if he had his brother's identity. After all they both looked the same, so why couldn't he be treated the same way as Ben?

Suddenly Meg started to wake up and Derek knew he couldn't afford to let Meg see him again. He kissed her gently on the forehead and whispered that he loved her. He slipped out of her hospital room quietly and went to his car and drove back back to the hotel he was staying in.

Meg woke up and felt a lot better than she did the previous night. She could see out the window that it would be morning soon. She looked around and seen that Ben wasn't there.

Meg said sadly: "It was just a dream. I really thought that I woke up earlier and he was here."

She lay on her side as tears formed in her eyes and slowly slipped down her face.

Meanwhile Ben had finally found the hospital where Meg had been taken. He drove there as fast as he could even though it was still technically the middle of the night. He was so worried about her. The nurse hadn't given any information when he had called because technically he wasn't family and she hadn't given him the chance to explain how he was connected to Meg.

When the doctor entered Meg's room early that morning he told her that he was going to release her from the hospital and asked if anyone could pick her up at the hospital. Meg thought about calling Ben but decided not to. She knew what she had to do when she got back to Sunset Beach. She wanted so badly to call her parents or Sara or one of her friends but she felt as though she needed to be alone for a little bit longer to get control of her emotions. She told the doctor that she would get a cab home. She filled out the nescessary formas to discharge herself and called a cab. She really wanted to call Ben but wouldn't let herself. She was too upset to think that he might be worried about her or have been up all night calling hospitals to see where she was. All she could think about was that he had left her at the cove by herself so he could be with Maria. The cab came and she told the driver to go to Sunset Beach. She bought her hand up to her head to try to ease the headache that she had and didn't see Ben's car pull up near the hospital entrance.

Ben raced into the hospital and stood at the nurses station and demanded to know what room Meg Cummings was in. The nurse checked the computer and told him the room and tried to tell him that Meg had just been discharged but he was half way down the corridor before she even got the first word out. When Ben got to the room he seen that it was empty and the bed was made.

"Where is she"? Ben thought to himself, "What if...?"

"No, no she can't be dead, I would know. But where is she?"
