Cyber-soap opera to launch

LOS ANGELES (Billboard) - Film director Betty Thomas is teaming with SoapCity.com, a Columbia TriStar Web site devoted to daytime dramas. Thomas will develop "Santa Cruz," an original four-part cyber-soap opera, the first Webisode of which is scheduled to premiere April 10 on SoapCity.com. Soap stars including Judith Chapman ("Days of our Lives"), Jack Armstrong ("One Life To Live") and Jason Winston George ("Sunset Beach") are expected to appear in the Internet series shot on the sets of "Days of our Lives."

The Webisodes will be interactive - viewers will be able to choose from three different final scenes. Internet surfers can also submit story ideas for the series on the Web site. Thomas got the idea for the series from a 10-year-old boy who auditioned for her latest movie, "28 Days," which bows April 14. "My life is like a soap opera," the boy said. "Before I realized it, I had written a fictional soap into the movie," Thomas said.
